The army ant colony's success is built on a self-organizing system of perfect obedience. But this system has a critical bug. When a group of ants loses the main trail, they can get stuck in a feedback loop, following each other in an endless circle. Known as a 'death spiral,' this phenomenon shows how a species' greatest strength can also be its most catastrophic vulnerability. They simply march until they die from exhaustion, unable to break the loop.
