Hidden Architecture of Patriarchy

The gender gap in architecture isn't a modern flaw; it was built into the profession's foundation. In the late 19th century, the creation of formal schools and organizations standardized the field, but also established a male-dominated blueprint for success. The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition provides a stark example. Sophia Hayden, the first woman to graduate from MIT's architecture program, was paid a fraction of her male peers and ultimately left the profession, revealing how its very structure was designed to exclude women.
