The American Civil War is said to have ended when General Lee surrendered. But the final land battle was actually fought over a month later, initiated by a Union colonel despite knowing the war was over. In a strange twist of history, this last skirmish resulted in a Confederate victory. This forgotten coda to the war challenges our very definition of when a conflict truly ends.
