Dale Earnhardt's death at the 2001 Daytona 500 was a tragedy that could have been prevented. For years, a safety device was available but resisted by many drivers, including Earnhardt himself. He was the fourth NASCAR driver to die from the same type of injury in less than a year. His death on live TV finally forced NASCAR to mandate the Head and Neck Support (HANS) device. Since the rule change, no driver in the sport's top divisions has died from a basilar skull fracture.
