The sound of cracking joints comes from the sudden formation of gas bubbles, not bones rubbing together. When pressure drops within the joint capsule, dissolved nitrogen and carbon dioxide create a cavity in the synovial fluid. This process, known as tribonucleation, releases the tension you feel almost instantly.
