History of Phrases

The term for social exclusion derives from a voting ritual in Ancient Athens designed to protect democracy. Voters scratched the names of powerful citizens onto shards of broken pottery known as ostraka. If enough people cast these ceramic ballots, the named individual faced a ten-year exile to prevent tyranny.
