After the Nazis banned symbols of the Norwegian monarchy, citizens began wearing paperclips on their lapels. It was a silent, shared signal of unity and national pride, playing on the Norwegian word for paperclip, 'binder,' meaning 'to bind together.' The symbol became so effective that the occupiers eventually outlawed its use, making wearing one an act of defiance punishable by arrest.
