Don't throw away that expired gift card just yet. Federal and state laws often prevent the funds on it from disappearing with the plastic. After a period of inactivity, card issuers are typically required to transfer the remaining balance to the state's unclaimed property division. You can often get your money back, either by requesting a new card from the issuer or by filing a claim with your state. It's your money, go and get it.
