The popular saying 'saved by the bell' wasn't born from Victorian-era safety coffins. Its true origins are much simpler, coming from the world of 19th-century boxing. The phrase first appeared in newspapers in the 1890s, literally describing a boxer being rescued from a knockout by the bell ending the round. It took decades for this expression to evolve from the boxing ring into the everyday metaphor for a last-minute rescue we use today.
