This is the story of an absurd legal loophole that gave a nation its legitimacy. In 1967, a former British Army major occupied an abandoned sea fort to start a pirate radio station, but instead declared it a sovereign state. When his son fired warning shots at a British vessel, a UK court made a surprising ruling. The fort was in international waters, so Britain had no jurisdiction. This mundane detail unintentionally legitimized the world's tiniest, most bizarre micronation.
